Dogs are now welcome on public transport across NZ.

New Zealand is embracing a more pet-friendly approach to public transportation, with several regions implementing policies that allow dogs to accompany their owners on various transit services.

Here’s an overview of how different areas are accommodating our four-legged companions:

Auckland: Leading the Way in Pet-Friendly Transit

Since December 2022, small domestic pets in approved carriers have been permitted on buses, trains, and ferries during off-peak hours. Building on this initiative, from May 2023, larger dogs that do not fit in carriers have been allowed on buses, provided they are on a lead and wear an approved muzzle. These policies aim to make public transport more accessible and convenient for pet owners across the city.

Some of the Guidelines for Travelling with Pets in Auckland:

  • Off-Peak Travel: Pets are allowed on public transport during off-peak hours: weekdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, after 6:30 PM, and all day on weekends and public holidays. Carriers for Small Pets: Pet carriers must be small enough to fit under a seat, or on the passenger’s lap.Leash and Muzzle for Large Dogs: Larger dogs must be on a lead and wear an approved muzzle.
  • No Upper Deck Access: Pets are not permitted on the upper deck of double-decker buses.
  • Cleanliness: Owners are responsible for any mess their pets make and must ensure that any pet mess is cleaned up before exiting the bus, train and/or platform.

And the best bit

  • Free Travel: Pets travel free of charge on buses and trains.

Service and assistance dogs are exempt from these restrictions and are allowed on all services at all times without the need for a muzzle.

Wellington: Have Pet-Inclusive public transport policies

Under the new Conditions of Carriage you are able to take your pet on Wellington Metlink trains and bus services during off-peak times.

Domestic pets are allowed to travel during off-peak times on all Metlink trains, buses and harbour ferries as long as they are fully enclosed in a suitable pet carrier – not just a bag or backpack. The pet carrier must be stored securely in the available space for luggage or on the passenger’s lap.

Some of the Guidelines for Travelling with Pets on Wellington Metlink:

  • The good news is your pet travels for free.

Other things to be aware of:

  • Off-Peak Travel: You can only take your pet during off peak times (9:00am to 3:00pm and after 6:30pm during weekdays, and all day weekends and public holidays)
  • Pets and their owners (like everyone else) must give up priority seating to those who need it, including those with a disability, the elderly, caregivers with prams or small children, and pregnant mothers.
  • Your pet is your responsibility, including getting on and off the bus, train or ferry.
  • If the vehicle is crowded, Metlink staff can ask you to wait for the next service.
  • If your pet disrupts other customers, you may be asked to get off at the next stop or station.
  • Pets are not permitted on ferries travelling to Matiu/Somes Island as this is a wildlife sanctuary.
  • It is dangerous for pets, owners and other customers if pets are not on a lead on train platforms, in station carparks, or at bus stops.

Service and assistance dogs are exempt from these restrictions and are allowed on all services at all times without the need for a muzzle.

Hawke’s Bay: Pets on Buses

In Hawke’s Bay, the goBay regional public transport system permits small dogs and cats to travel free of charge during off-peak times.

Pets must be secured in appropriate carry cages, which can sit on your knee for the duration of the journey ensuring safety and comfort for all passengers.

This does not apply to guide dogs or special service assistance dogs, who can travel at any time.

Canterbury: Exploring Pet-Friendly Options

Canterbury is actively considering policies to allow pets on public transport. The regional council has proposed permitting domestic pets on Metro services, provided they are in approved carriers and travel during off-peak hours.

Public feedback is being sought to shape these policies effectively.

New Zealand’s move towards pet-friendly public transport reflects a growing recognition of the important role pets play in people’s lives.

By adhering to the guidelines and being considerate of fellow passengers, pet owners can enjoy the convenience of public transport alongside their furry friends.
