Dogs are now welcome on public transport across NZ.
New Zealand is embracing a more pet-friendly approach to public transportation, with several regions implementing policies that allow dogs to accompany their owners on various transit services.
Here’s an overview of how different areas are accommodating our four-legged companions:
Auckland: Leading the Way in Pet-Friendly Transit
Since December 2022, small domestic pets in approved carriers have been permitted on buses, trains, and ferries during off-peak hours. Building on this initiative, from May 2023, larger dogs that do not fit in carriers have been allowed on buses, provided they are on a lead and wear an approved muzzle. These policies aim to make public transport more accessible and convenient for pet owners across the city.

Service and assistance dogs are exempt from these restrictions and are allowed on all services at all times without the need for a muzzle.

Wellington: Have Pet-Inclusive public transport policies
Under the new Conditions of Carriage you are able to take your pet on Wellington Metlink trains and bus services during off-peak times.
Domestic pets are allowed to travel during off-peak times on all Metlink trains, buses and harbour ferries as long as they are fully enclosed in a suitable pet carrier – not just a bag or backpack. The pet carrier must be stored securely in the available space for luggage or on the passenger’s lap.

Hawke’s Bay: Pets on Buses
In Hawke’s Bay, the goBay regional public transport system permits small dogs and cats to travel free of charge during off-peak times.
Pets must be secured in appropriate carry cages, which can sit on your knee for the duration of the journey ensuring safety and comfort for all passengers.
This does not apply to guide dogs or special service assistance dogs, who can travel at any time.

Canterbury: Exploring Pet-Friendly Options
Canterbury is actively considering policies to allow pets on public transport. The regional council has proposed permitting domestic pets on Metro services, provided they are in approved carriers and travel during off-peak hours.
Public feedback is being sought to shape these policies effectively.
