How Often Should I Give My Dog a Bath?

You should bath your dog in the summer as needed, but avoid overbathing, as it can dry out their skin and disrupt their natural coat oils.

A general guideline is to bath your dog every 4-6 weeks, but this depends on their activity level, coat type, and overall cleanliness, with more active or long-coated dogs potentially needing baths more often than indoor, short-haired dogs.

Regular brushing and a quick rinse between baths can help keep them fresh.

Factors to Consider

  • Activity Level – An outdoor dog that swims in ponds or rolls in the mud will need more frequent baths than a dog who stays indoors.
  • Coat Type – Dogs with longer or medium coats tend to collect more dirt and debris, requiring more frequent baths than short-haired dogs.
  • Skin Health – If your dog has dry or sensitive skin, bathing too often can cause irritation. In such cases, consult your vet for advice.
  • Allergies – If you have allergies, wash often to lower dander (the collection of microscopic flakes of dead skin shed by animals with fur, hair, or feathers) and follow your vet’s guidance.

Tips for Summer Bathing

  • Assess their smell – A noticeable, unpleasant odour is often the best indicator that your dog needs a bath.
  • Use appropriate shampoo – Always use a dog-specific shampoo (human shampoos can upset their skin’s pH).
Brush your dog before and after to reduce tangles.
  • Don’t overdo it – Bathing too often can strip away your dog’s natural oils, leading to dry, itchy skin.
